Abstract

During Renaissance, great artists set the premises of artistic anatomy, while Andreas Vesalius founded modern anatomy. Andreas Vesalius had been interested in anatomy and dissection of animals since childhood. He studied medicine in Paris and Padua. At the age of 25 he became professor. By verifying through detailed dissections the descriptions of Galen, descriptions which he rejected, Vesalius takes anatomy to a scientific approach. In 1538 he elaborates “Tabulae anatomicae”, and in 1534 he publishes “De humani corporis fabrica”, comprising the entire human anatomy. Accused by the followers of Galen’s conceptions, Andreas Vesalius quits teaching and dedicates to the practice of medicine at various European royal courts. In 1564 he was sentenced to death by the Inquisition. Defended and saved by king Filip the IInd, who sent him into pilgrimage to the Holy Grave, he shipwrecked and died of starvation. The anatomy of the XVI and XVII century was dominated by the work and concepts of Andreas Vesalius, who is consider the founder of modern human anatomy.
