For ages, dentistry has been one of the less appreciated and less developed medical sciences, the only treatment applied in cases of tooth aches being the extraction. The 200-250 years following the Renaissance may be defined as the period when the foundation of modern medicine was laid. The current paper aims at analyzing chronologically the role of some very important physicians such as Anthony van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), Marcello Malpighi (1628- 1694), and John Hunter (1728-1793) which contributed to the development of the dental histological research.Published
