Abstract

European citizenship is a concept that resulted from the transition from economic rights to those of civil nature. The citizenship that every citizen of the member state has, namely European citizenship, was debated only by the Treaty of Maastricht. This concept does not replace the citizenship of the member state, it has only a complementary character.
