Abstract

The present study analyses the distinction between identity and self in Virginia Woolf's 'Mrs. Dalloway' as both concepts get their contour in different contexts such as the naming of people, workings of memory, and circumstances of death. Identity fluctuates and only 'apparitions' vary according to time, place, and mood. Self transcends all 'apparitions' and its manifestations can be experienced in momentary epiphanies.
