Abstract

In the modern world of globalization, we come across a diversity of languages, ethnicities, and worldviews. This paper examines sociolinguistic and cultural diversity in relation to the linguistic structures of Indian languages—Hindi and Marathi and shows how linguistic diversity is closely related to cultural diversity and worldviews. The reflection of cultural diversity in the diversity of linguistic structures clearly points to the universal principle that diversity, being everywhere, is the very nature of existence. Hence it is necessary to understand its implications for cross-cultural communication and peace at all levels—personal, societal, and global. Also, language teaching needs to be done in the context of cultural understanding rather than mechanical learning of linguistic exercises.
