The JPU Corpus and the Lexical Tutor

Most recent learner corpus studies fall into one of two main groups. In one, researchers’ main aim is to contrast native language with the way non-native users aim to communicate in speech and writing. In the other, teachers and researchers are primarily interested in revealing the internally valid lessons that can be drawn from the analysis of learner language. This applied linguistic paper falls into the latter category as it describes the rationale of the development of a large learner corpus of English as a foreign language. It aims to highlight the ways in which the pedagogical potential of that collection can be exploited in tandem with an innovative corpus and vocabulary development application.Published
