Abstract

The sacred music dedicated to the religious celebrations of the Evangelical Lutheran liturgical year corresponds to the musical and theological principles of Martin Luther, each musical work is based on a specific biblical quotation previously chosen by Luther himself. Lent and the Holy Week, when the Passion of Jesus is commemorated, precede the Holy Easter, which in turn is followed by the Feast of Ascension and the Pentecost. The 4 arias of the Transylvanian composer Johann Sartorius junior are dedicated to the three Sundays of the Shrovetide, or the Pre-Lenten Season: Septuagesimae, Sexagesimae, and Quinquagesimae or Estomihi.
