Abstract

The concept of translation-loyalty of literary works is presented in this paper, approached from the historical perspective of translation studies. The current special bibliography of translation theory deals with the question of loyalty-disloyalty in the category of appropriateness and timeliness, therefore it focuses more on its reception history background – with its motivating sociocultural and political features, like the importance of power relations - than on its linguistic features. I would like to discuss the most important concepts that determine translation loyalty while concluding the relevant views. It will be shown that the demand for loyalty towards the translation of literary works, independent of its changing components over time and regardless of its apparent unscientific character, is inseparably present at the roots of any translation of literary works.
