A Contrastive-Translational Approach to Substitution

Abstract

The study is aimed at investigating the contrastiveness of substitution as a formal link between English and Romanian. The methodology for analysis adopts a translational perspective, which implies the examination of examples extracted from two translations of the same source language text. The findings display a variety of means of translating English substitutes into Romanian, which lead to conclusions relative to similarities and differences in the occurrence of substitution in the two languages, determined by structural peculiarities, shifts of cohesion and translator preferences.
