Abstract

This paper presents the most important stages of the successive transformation of the category of character. The character is to be found in narratives, and according to the linguistic or literary trend, it was analyzed from various points of view. The semiotic approach is the most recent, and it considers this category as being part of a narrative scheme. Semioticians applied linguistic models to narrative, and new categories appeared, such as Agent, Pacient, Actant, or Actor.
