Abstract

Gender-based violence is a serious social phenomenon which endangers the basis of a democratic state. It represents a threat to the fundamental values which are at the basis of the European Union. The most serious form of gender-based violence is femicide. Over time, the institutions which regulate human rights have passed a series of stipulations meant to fight this phenomenon. However, this phenomenon is persistent, and it endangers the fundamental human right of all women: the right to life. This article contains a study of femicide from the perspective of gender equality, by analyzing the dimension of the phenomenon and the factors which favor femicide.
