Head Adornment as Sign of Marital Status. A Semiological Study
Keywords:
clothing, traditional culture, semiological analysisAbstract
Contemporary clothing, as guided by fashion, provides information on the identity of the wearer, the latter’s self-representation, and their relation with society. The meaning of traditional clothing (the traditional costume) is independent of and even opposed to fashion. The semiological analysis of the head adornment worn by unmarried and married women in Rupea, Romania highlights that clothing is a signifier of their marital status and confirms the importance of marriage in traditional culture.Downloads
