The Significance of the Sânziene Holiday

Abstract

Starting from a pre-Christian ritual, namely the cult of fertility and fecundity, the holiday of Sânziene symbolizes the beginning of summer. The young women about to marry make wedding incantations accompanied by wreath plaiting. Due to the rural population’s migration to cities, nowadays, one can hardly identify the original secrets of the holiday.
