Abstract

Acne is a disease of pilosebaceous units in the skin. It is thought to be caused by interplay of three factors: excessive sebum production, hyperkeratinization of the hair follicle which obstructs the follicle, colonisation of Propionibacterium acnes, which provokes an immune response throughout the production of numerous inflammatory mediators. Acne treatments consist of topical agents (retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, topical antibiotics) and systemic medications (antibiotics, oral contraceptive pills, isotretinoin). Selection of therapy should be based on the severity and type of acne. Acne can cause significant embarrassment and anxiety in affected patients. It is important for dermatologists and general practitioners to educate patients about available treatment options and their expected outcomes.
