Abstract

Alcoholism is considered one of the most frequent social diseases in the early twentieth century, due to its relation to socio-economic conditions. In Romania alcoholism was considered a major contributing cause of tuberculosis, epilepsy and child mortality. Up to 50% of cases of conflicts that involved the Police were due to alcohol. Under these conditions, the fight against alcoholism became the first and most important duty of politicians and physicians at that time.
