Abstract

This study was undertaken to investigate an indoor threat, namely that of household cleaning substances in nine different areas of the city of Aydin, in western Turkey. A stratified sampling method was used to reach 603 participants. Study instruments included a questionnaire and a checklist. Results show that 14.4% of the participants cited experience with poisoning due to cleaning substances in the preceding year. Health care region, cleaning location, and cleaning substance storage place all have statistically significant relationships to poisoning (p<0.05). The Aydin study finds that consumers’ use of products according to specifications set forth by legislation is low and highlights the importance of raising awareness and creating educational interventions targeted at consumers.
