Abstract

The present paper presents the results of a large retrospective study over five years on a group with open fracture of the shank, treated in the University Clinic of Orthopedics and Traumas, University Emergency Clinical Hospital of Brasov, Romania. The aim of the study was to reveal the elements that lead to complications, with the purpose of avoiding and decreasing the frequency of appearance (masculine sex, active age, city residence, traffic participation, surgical intervention temporization, incorrect first aid, alcoholism). Continuous increase of open shank fracture incidence is a consequence of modern life (engines, industrialization), and the decreasing frequency of complications could be realized as well by knowing and evaluating correctly the promoting factors as by collaborating in a multidisciplinary and well-trained team.
