Abstract

This paper investigates a conventional fuzzy control algorithm to be used in a closed loop system that should return and keep the blood glucose concentration at normal values for diabetic patients. The controller design follows general guidelines in fuzzy control theory. Simulations are done using a model of glucose kinetics under the influence of insulin injection rates and exogenous glucose disturbance. The model is an extension to the well-known Bergman’s minimal model by adding the carbohydrates absorption rate from Hovorka’s model as the glucose disturbance input.
