Abstract

The sustainability of manufacturing systems plays a major role in the insurance of the competitive power of enterprises. To describe a manufacturing system as sustainable, the LEAN approach must be complemented by environmental considerations. In the present paper, the authors describe Sustainable Manufacturing Systems (SMS) in terms of costs, energy consumption, and carbon dioxide emissions. The mathematical optimization model describes the objective minimization functions, the decision-making variables and the conditions on the three components. The proposed theoretical model is implemented by means of the standard function block of specialized simulation and optimization environment.
